City doctor prescribes POEM to help swallow food
CHENNAI: Imagine getting up in the middle of the night with your nose filled with water, and mouth with the the food you had for dinner. This unease is a symptom of acute swallowing disorder. A city hospital has introduced a new machine to treat patients suffering from it. 
“Instances like regurgitation, food and water rising up to the nose when you are sleeping and difficulty in pushing the food bolus in are some of the symptoms of a condition called Achalasia Cardia. Every month we get around four patients with this disorder,” says Dr T S Chandrasekar, chairman of MedIndia.
Achalasia Cardia is caused when the valve that leads from the food pipe to the stomach fails to open up. Due to this, the passage of food into the stomach is blocked, leading to accumulation in the food pipe. The food particles later come back through the nose. This may even lead to chest infection.
“In the later stages, I had water coming out through my nose and ears. It became unbearable,” says a 53-year-old lady, who was treated at the hospital recently. While the usual treatment for the condition includes balloon dilation, laparoscopy and drugs, a new treatment called POEM (Per Oral Endoscopic Myotomy) includes inserting a knife into the food pipe using endoscopy to cut the muscles that block the food passage.
“The advantage of the new system is that doctors can monitor the entire process of operation. Moreover, since the endoscopy is done by inserting the instruments, there are no scars on the body. The patient can be discharged within 48 hours,” said Dr T S Chandrasekar. The new procedure is about 10 per cent more expensive than the traditional balloon dilation procedure, he said.
The technology, which was first introduced in Japan, is now available in hospitals in Mumbai and Hyderabad.

Chandrasekar, MD, DM, D.Sc, FRCP, Chairman & Chief Gastroenterologist, MedIndia Hospitals, Chennai,
The award which was presented as part of the Independence Day Celebrations at Chennai on 15th August, 2012, included a Plaque and a Gold Medal (10 gm).

It is to be noted that, Dr. Chandrasekar has conducted more than 72 focused camps at Chennai, Thiruvannamalai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Coimbatore and Tiruppur districts benefitting more than 3200 differently abled persons, concentrating on Hepatitis B virus detection and for detection of deficiencies in iron, haemoglobin, lipids, vitamins, protein, calcium and their treatment.

Dr.John's Experience with Medindia Hospitals
The one word that immediately comes to mind when you observe TSC is “organized”. Well you won’t find many people who write down the 44 things which they have to do during the day in a small diary and ticks them off one by one till the last work is completed.
My association with Dr.TSC started 3 months back when I joined MedIndia hospital for a fellowship. As expected sir was an excellent endoscopist. But soon I realized that was just one aspect of him. One thing that impressed me so much was his willingness to teach. He says today’s teacher may be tomorrow’s patient so never hesitate to teach. Some good logic that is! I think he is still an eager student at heart. I was pleasantly surprised seeing his child like enthusiasm on demonstrating a difficult EUS sign.
His pleasant nature and infectious smile puts his patients at ease almost immediately .He hears them out patiently even though the diagnosis may appear mundane to him and explains to the patients their condition by coming to their level. What he says is that “You may have done 1000 Cholecystectomies, but this one is the first for the patient. So spend time with him.”
The man is a perfectionist with an eye for detail and an eye for mistakes as well. Sometimes it can be difficult to work with him as he expects the same level of commitment, hardwork and dedication from each of his employees. All said and done he is a good superior who considers those who work for him as part of his extended family and takes care of them in their hour of need.
He is a self built man who is proud of the long and hard journey he has undertaken in his life. He cherishes everything in this journey, his family, his old mates and yeah his old scopes! I had come to this place to learn advanced endoscopy. But I feel it is just one of the things I would learn from this man.

Digestive Endoscopy Workshop 2011
Medindia hospitals has successfully conducted DEW 2011 endorsed by MCI and The Tamilnadu Dr.MGR Medical University, Chennai, TamilNadu. During this event 5 International Faculty, 200 National Faculty and lot of Gastroenterology doctors all over from india participated.

Dr. T.S. Chandrasekar, MD, DM, FRCP (Glasgow) was awarded the prestigious D.Sc (Doctor of Science – Honoris Causa) degree by the Tamilnadu Dr. MGR Medical University at Chennai on Tuesday, the 10th November, 2009. Dr. Chandrasekar is a world renowned Interventional Gastroenterologist & Therapeutic Endoscopist who has many firsts to his credit. He is the Chairman & Chief Gastroenterologist of MedIndia Institute of Medical Specialities (MIMS), a unit of Medindia Hospitals, Chennai & Coimbatore. He is also the Founder Trustee of MedIndia Charitable Trust, a medical educational trust which is involved in creating public awareness about various types of Digestive Cancers
Dr. Chandrasekar was the immediate Past President of Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy of India (SGEI). He serves as the Governing Council Member of the Indian Society of Gastroenterology and is an Advisory Board Member of the Medical Journal, Digestive Endoscopy. Dr. Chandrasekar was the recipient of the prestigious Olympus J-Mitra Endoscopy Award during 2008. He has also been awarded with the SISCO-PENTAX Oration Award during 2009.
